Maybe you'd rather hear about something exotic, like marble sidewalks, squid snacks, or old ladies singing tonal Chinese as they walk along. But today, I ate a lot of sugar. That's what happened.
Sugar! I don't have a sweet tooth, in case you don't know that about me, I like salty things, and greasy things (not all of course). But today I bought a chilled Late at 7-11 from the refrigerator section, whatever you call that. I bought some sort of peanut brittle, and two boiled "tea eggs" (Those weren't sweet.) I did this all in the 7 minutes between classes, I usually just walk really fast down the street a little ways to the nearest 7-11. One time I tried walking to Sushi Express between classes, but I had to turn back when my watch told me my time was half-way up. Normally I buy water and nuts, salty things. But today I ate the sweet things during class. The teacher asked me if I liked sweets, I said sometimes, too lazy to tell her "normally no, but today, why not." I really should learn her name.
OK, but then, after class I dropped my stuff off at home, and went out and got my self some beef noodle soup (also not sweet). But they don't have drinks at these places, in this hopelessly non drink serving country, I think the soup broth is supposed to satisfy your thirst. But not mine. So after my beef noodle soup I craved a drink. I ran across the street, I of course looked both ways first, to the "Wellcome" (double-L theirs) grocery store and bought a "Orange Fanta" not my first choice, but they have no root beer in this country, and Wellcome didn't even have the sasparilla that you can get at "Family Mart". But I wasn't done, I got myself a set of Twix bars, a liquid filled "Frosty Mug" for 3 dollars for my beer (how could I not buy that?), and a bunch of bananas.
So today I walked home from dinner drinking my high fructose syrup bubbly beverage, holding an umbrella over my head with the same hand, and a grocery bag and a Twix bar with the other hand, somewhat awkwardly. I have to admit, I was a little self conscious, I don't think much Taiwanese food is nearly as sweet as American food. So I wondered if the locals I was passing were shaking their heads as I passed by thinking "How can those Americans eat so much sugar? No wonder they're so fat." But I hardly ever eat this much sugar at the same time!
By the time I got home I really did feel a little weird. It may have been all in my head, but I felt a little bit of a sugar-crash.
